ABOUT THE AUTHOR
ALIX SCHWARTZ
Joyce Pomeroy Schwartz is a public art consultant, curator, and lecturer with a unique concentration in public art policy, contemporary art for architecture and landscape, and the implementation of arts master plans. Her goal is to integrate permanent and temporary public art into the broader concepts of urban revitalization and environmental and cultural planning.
An early advocate for the role of the arts in America, Joyce was a founder and first Executive Director of the Rockaway Music and Arts Council in Queens, NY, the second civic arts council in New York State.
In 1968, Joyce founded The Photographer’s Gallery, the first gallery in New York City exhibiting photography as fine art, showing Brassai, Jacque-Henri Lartique, Ray Metzker, Robert Heinecken, Man Ray, Naomi Savage, Andre Kertesz, W, Eugene Smith and others.
She joined Pace Gallery in 1972 and was “anointed” Director of Commissions by founders Arne and Milly Glimcher working with their gallery artists on major public projects, notably Jean Dubuffet, Robert Irwin, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi, Lucas Samaras, David von Schlegell, Tony Smith, Ernest Trova and Jack Youngerman.
Leaving Pace in 1982, Joyce founded Works of Art for Public Spaces, Ltd, dedicating her efforts to working with American and international artists creating major works of Art for Architecture. She has completed permanent public projects with Vito Acconci, Stephen Antonakas, Lita Albuquerque, Alice Aycock, Romare Bearden, Andrea Blum, Olga D’Amaral, John Dowell, Lauren Ewing, Jackie Ferrara, R.M. Fischer, Maren Hassinger, Jene Highstein, Doug Hollis, Nancy Holt, Jane Kaufman, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Sol Lewitt, Maya Lin, Winifred Lutz, Loren Madsen, Robert Morris, Michael Morrill, Matt Mullican, Manuel Neri, Giuseppe Penone, Anne & Patrick Poirier, Charles Ross, Alan Saret, David Saunders, Ned Smyth, Michelle Stuart, George Sugarman, Lenore Tawney, and Brian Tolle.
Schwartz recently established the Joyce Pomeroy and Harold Schwartz Public Art Archive at Bobst Library, Fales Special Collections, NYU Langone, including the archives of The Public Art Fund and Creative Time. The archive includes contemporary and modern artists’ monographs, slides, and artists’ papers for scholars, students, public art professionals, advisors, and collectors.
In 2023, she completed The Private Eye in Public Art, part memoir of her life as a public art consultant and curator, part history of Public Art, and part practicum. The book is about the perils, pains, and pleasures of making art for architecture, how the public responds to art in public places, and how and why that reception may change over time.
